Get the best from your engines
Want your engines to last longer? Well the secret to that is lubricant. Follow
these few tips and you’ll get more out of the life of your engine

Why do you need to change the Lubricant on time?
Timely lubricant change is an essential component of maintenance and ensure that
your vehicle remains in top gear at all times. Also because lubricants collect
particles and pollutants such as carbonic matter, worn particles of metal etc,
it is necessary to replenish them from time to time. Moreover, any oil’s
efficiency diminishes due to dilution by water and fuel, oxidation, additives
and shearing.
How often should lubricant be changed?
At least once a year if vehicle is not in constant use. However, the frequency
of oil change depends on the lubricant used, the type of vehicle and the
country, city or highway it’s driven in. Other determinants are also thermal and
mechanical requirements. One word of caution: Never drive with oil level below
the minimum mark on the dipstick as that is a clear indication there is not
enough oil. To persist in driving at those low levels will result in rapid
circulation of the fluid and accelerated wear on the oil. Also, it is always
recommended to check the oil level in your vehicle regularly especially after a
long trip.
Benefits of Lubricants
Lubricants benefit the engine in a number of ways. They are: cooling engine hot
spots and moving parts; reducing friction and fuel consumption; ensuring that
engine parts remain clean; and protecting inner surfaces of the engine against
corrosion.
What are the advantages of a GOOD quality Lubricant?
A good quality lubricant provides motorists with a number of benefits. These
include easier cold start and reduced wear (20 to 30 per cent of engine wear
occurs between startup and the time the engine reaches optimal temperature);
Longer engine life; fuel savings as a result of reduced friction of moving parts
and better engine performance.
What are the advantages of a multigrade lubricant?
A multigrade lubricant is one whose properties have been artificially modified
to reduce changes in its viscosity with temperature changes. A multigrade
lubricant is more fluid at low temperatures and thicker at high temperatures
than a monograde lubricant. Essentially that means when the vehicle is not being
used (for several hours), the engine oil sinks in the crankcase so that, on
starting, it takes a certain amount of time (a few microseconds) to again reach
all parts of the engine that need to be lubricated. Since a multigrade lubricant
is more fluid at low temperatures, it reaches the various engine components more
quickly than a monograde lubricant, thereby reducing wear on starting. A
Multigrade lubricant also allows fuel saving of around 1.5 per cent to 3 per
cent than monograde lubricant.
Multigrade lubricant provides better engine protection at low and high
temperatures than monograde, in that they maintain optimum viscosity over the
engine operating temperature range.
