Sohar Aluminium
The picture so far
As Sohar Aluminium prepares for the final stages of construction and
commissioning our journalist Jessica Brookes and photographer Rajesh Burman
record the progress from ground zero
With first hot metal production set for June 12, Sohar Aluminium is well on its
way to its completion date. The past three years, from its inception in 2005 to
these final phases of construction, have seen the Greenfield smelter reach many
of its goals. Along the way, the dedicated team have faced a number of
challenges and set backs, however this has not dampened their spirit.
Commenting on the progress of the project so far CEO of Sohar Aluminium, Tony
Kinsman said, “To date the project has proceeded very well. I am very pleased
with the progress that it has made, and the success of the team. It is a project
that will be a world benchmark in terms of smelter construction and execution.
It will also be a benchmark for those smelters being built in our neighboring
countries. So, I think this gives cause for Oman to be very proud of its
achievement here. We are still not finished, we still have a little way to go
but so far we are well on track to defining that sort of benchmark.”
produce 350,000 tonnes of product in the form of either liquid metal,
23.7kg ingots or 700kg sow ingots.
After a safety induction and being kitted out with hardhat and steel-cap boots
we climbed one of the 60 meter stacks that process the smelter emissions to get
a bird’s eye view of the project. The sheer size of the smelter from this height
made it clear that reaching these final phases of the project could have been no
easy feat. On touring the site and meeting the people who have worked tirelessly
to get to this point, it is clear to see that everyone from the construction
personnel through to the operating staff are all passionate about what they have
created. As the milestones roll near, the atmosphere on site is one of
excitement and anticipation as the team busily works to reach these last stages
and see the project come to fruition.
