OMAN HOLDINGS INTERNATIONAL
On an acquisition spree
Oman Holdings International has always been a business conglomerate with
diversified interests. This diversification was further extended during 2005-06,
when the company acquired significant stake in two companies – a travel agency
and an engineering company. The latter has been a successful operator for over
two decades in the Sultanate of Oman, catering to multinational companies
worldwide.
The acquisition of a majority stake and full management control in the travel
company should help OHI strengthen its presence in the travel sector. The
acquired company has been functioning for over six years. OHI hopes to further
consolidate its travel business and cater to the various segments within this
sector. Turkish Airlines, of which the company is the general sales agent for
Oman, has gone ‘on line’ introducing direct flights between Istanbul and Muscat.
The company deems this beneficial. In furtherance of its strategic plan to
exploit opportunities in the tourism sector, OHI has acquired a Desert Camp. It
is being developed on an international scale to attract both domestic and
overseas tourists.
The company has also acquired 100 per cent equity in an advertising and
publicity company during the year. The acquired company is associated with a
major international brand and has been a successful operator in Oman for
over 12 years.
In 2005, the Ministry of Information awarded a letter of intent to the company
to establish radio and television stations in the Sultanate. The firm believes
this heralds the pioneer initiative on the part of the government to privatise
broadcasting.

OHI has also entered into an arrangement with an overseas investor to establish
a chemical manufacturing plant in Sohar. The project is expected to commence
production during the first half of 2007. The future of the company looks as
bright as has been demonstrated by it in the last five years. The rapid
industrialisation around Sohar should provide with good potential for the
company to expand.
