Tickets are on sale for the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, the first tournament of
the 2007 European Tour, to be played at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club from January
18-21 next year. The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), the Championship owner,
is targeting a spectator turnout of over 20,000 for the January tournament
following the success of this year’s inaugural event.

“In January this year, over 17,500 people turned out to watch some of the
world’s best golfers and we believe that the quality of the overall field,
participation of so many star players together with improved facilities at the
Abu Dhabi Golf Club will mean more people will come out to experience the second
championship,” said Mubarak Al Muhairi, Director General, ADTA.
Spectators at the 2007 Championship will be able to see 120 players fighting it
out for a share of the US$2 million prize money, including defending champion
Chris DiMarco, one of the US’ top 10 golfers, Spain’s Sergio Garcia, now ranked
8th on the official world golf rankings, Ryder Cup star Colin Montgomerie and
playing for the first time in Abu Dhabi, the two-time US Open Champion from
South Africa, Retief Goosen, ranked 6th in the world.
The Abu Dhabi Golf Championship 2007 has attracted a high profile sponsorship,
including Etihad Airways and Aldar as Diamond Sponsors; Standard Chartered Bank
as a Platinum Sponsor; Nissan, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Omega and Xerox as Gold
Sponsors.
Etihad Challenge
In conjunction with its lead sponsorship of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championships
2007, Etihad Airways is giving golfers across the world the chance to compete
for the world’s longest golf drive, from the wing of a wide-body aircraft on the
runway at the Abu Dhabi International Airport.
The competition will build on the success of the ‘2006 Swing on the Wing’, in
which images of professional golfers, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey, were beamed
round the world. “The 2006 Swing on the Wing created a huge impact across the
world. Etihad received hundreds of requests from guests asking how they could
have their own ‘Swing on the Wing’, and so we decided to launch this
ground-breaking competition,” said Geert W. Boven, vice president commercial,
Etihad Airways.
‘Swing on the Wing’ is set to take place at up to 40 golf clubs around the
globe. Members at each participating golf club will take part in a ‘longest
drive’ competition, with the winning player entering a prize draw, with the
chance of flying to Abu Dhabi for the final. Three winning names from the clubs
will be chosen and flown to Abu Dhabi to compete alongside the European Tour
golf star, and long drive specialist, Paul Slater, at Abu Dhabi International
Airport on January 17, 2007. Slater set the world record for the world’s longest
drive earlier this year, smashing the ball a staggering 884 yards.
